Lee is also investigating a case of a shooting of a police officer. At first, it looks like the convicted man is guilty and an informant for a gang, but Lee proves that the cop had shot himself with a secret gun disguised as a pen, and the convict is freed.

Most theologians in the early and high period of Reformed orthodoxy believed in the power of the civil magistrate to call and conduct synods, in the necessity of enforcing both tables of the law, and in the establishment principle (i.e., an official state church supported financially and enjoying certain legal privileges). They maintained that the magistrate had the power to punish heretics, enforce uniformity of doctrine and worship, and use capital punishment (in extreme cases) to protect society from the leavening effects of sin and false teaching.
Both Pufendorf and Locke were writing in response to the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes (1685) which forced French Huguenots to convert to Catholicism, face life in prison, or flee the country. Toleration looked better and more conducive to the aims of Christianity than giving the sovereign final say over the teaching and worship of the church. The move away from the strict enforcement of religious nationalism was promoted most powerfully not by free thinkers and atheists but by committed Protestants.
As a member of the New Jersey Provincial Congress, Witherspoon and the other delegates (including other prominent Presbyterians) defended religious freedom and opposed religious establishments. Article XVIII of the Constitution they framed says the following:
Many Christian doctrines raise difficult philosophical questions. Forexample, Christians have traditionally insisted that they worship asingle God, while simultaneously identifying that God with a trinitycomprised of three numerically distinct, fully divine persons: theFather, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is not easy to see how threedivine persons add up to one God. Similarly, Christians have alsoasserted that a human man, Jesus of Nazareth, is also God-the-Son, thesecond person of the divine trinity. It is not easy to see how a humanman, who is born, lives, and dies, could also be a fully divine being.Consider also the relationship between divine providence and humanfreedom. Are human beings free to accept or reject God, or does Godalone decide who will accept or reject God? Any answer to thistheological question will also assume some specific philosophicalaccount of human freedom and moral responsibility.

Hope and Healing - Surviving Breast Cancer (6BE165)Everyday Insights - EMOTIONAL STRATEGIES(Also available as MP3 audio)Of all the cancers out there, breast cancer is particularly feared. While women naturally recoil at this diagnosis, the truth is this form of cancer is often highly treatable. With early detection and a proactive doctor-patient strategy for care and follow-up, favorable outcomes for those with this disease are improving steadily. Advances in oncology have done much to lengthen people's lives and in many cases eradicate the cancer altogether. That being said, battling cancer is no small challenge and doing so often requires surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and other forms of treatment. Combating it is an all-in effort best waged by leaning on God, staying focused on your care and, ideally, engaging with supportive family and friends. In all of this, knowing that God is there with you in your cancer, especially in your cancer, is the single most important take-away from this disease. Here Jesus puts the matter into perspective, "Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows" (Matthew 10:29-31).Download this PDF Download MP3 Audio File

Regrets, Reality, Restoration (6BE159)Everyday Insights - LIFE SKILLS(Also available as MP3 audio)Regrets: whose life is not plagued by at least a few of these nagging leftovers from the past? The things we regret doing--or not doing, as the case may be--can wear us down, reshaping our lives and our sense of self, in the process. Left unattended, regrets erode our self-esteem, our willingness to press on, even our ability to think clearly. Everything becomes shrouded by the guilt, the pain we've caused, the sense that lives have been ruined, or at least dreadfully altered, by our foolish mistakes. What's happened in our lives, however, does not have to dictate the present--or the future. We can move beyond the crippling anguish and pain our decisions may have caused. Still, restoration--true restoration--is not purely a matter of willpower and positive thinking. It's turning to the One who has taken all our griefs, sorrows, anxieties, blunders, and misdeeds to the cross and where, once and for all time, He won for us an ultimate victory, through His death and resurrection. In Jesus there is a way out of your past. There is no sin beyond pardon. Even as Peter was devastated by his callousness toward the Savior's predicament and arrest, he was restored--by the grace of God--to a life that has made a difference in the lives of untold millions through the centuries.Download this PDF Download MP3 Audio File
